Physician Leadership: Let Me Get Outta Your Way!

Let Me Get Outta Your Way!

Back in 2009, in his groundbreaking book Drive, bestselling author Daniel Pink explored the powerful role of intrinsic motivation in driving performance and satisfaction. One of the key concepts he highlighted was autonomy—our desire to have control over our work. Pink argued that true motivation does not come from external rewards or punishment, but instead from the ability to direct our own efforts. When we’re empowered to make decisions about our work, we become more engaged, innovative, and productive.

Just as it was true 15 years ago, in many of today’s demanding work settings, leaders often focus on tight control and rigid structures. While this approach can yield short-term results, it rarely inspires long-term growth or satisfaction.

In my career as a business professor and leadership consultant, I have asked more than 4,000 people to describe the worst work of their careers. Being micromanaged (under tight control) is one of the descriptors people most often share. They despise it, and they perform poorly when being held under the thumb of an overbearing boss.

When these same 4,000+ people were asked about the best work of their careers, they echoed Pink’s sentiments and talked about being trusted and empowered to explore their own ideas and solve problems. Cultivating environments that foster autonomy isn’t about reducing accountability; it’s about providing the space for people to leverage their skills in ways that align with both their personal and organizational goals. It’s about providing clear desired outcomes, offering flexibility, then getting out of the way and setting people free.
