Physician Leadership: Imperfection is Your Superpower

Imperfection is Your Superpower

By Matt Kincaid, PhD
VP/Head of Coaching

As we’ve learned over the years from scholars like Brene Brown, when we allow ourselves to be real and imperfect, we give others permission to do the same and open the door to deeper connections. The power of vulnerability is that it makes us relatable and creates space for openness and understanding. It shows others we’re willing to risk judgment or misunderstanding for the sake of showing up and being real. Perfection, on the other hand, can feel like an unscalable wall standing tall between us and others.

This idea makes sense conceptually for most of us, but being vulnerable can be difficult and confusing. To help, here are five questions I use with executive coaching clients to encourage trust building through vulnerability:

1. What’s one challenge you’ve experienced along your journey you could share with your team? (shows you’re human and makes you relatable)

2. What would it mean for you to be more “real” with your team, even in small ways? (shows your authenticity and makes it easier for others to connect with you)

3. What is something you struggle with as a leader? How might sharing this with your team positively shift the way you are viewed? (shows you know you have leadership gaps, and the vulnerable admission can inspire others to trust you more)

4. Is there something you wish you could say openly to your team but feel hesitant to share? (great practice in getting out of your comfort zone and being vulnerable)

5. How can you solicit more feedback from your team about how you can improve as a leader? (shows you value their perspective and want to get better)

Don’t tout perfection and unintentionally build a wall. Instead, embrace your imperfection and intentionally build a bridge. Lean into your humanity and allow your authentic self to be seen.
