Physician Leadership: Permission to Grow Slowly

Physician Leadership: Permission to Grow Slowly
By Matt Kincaid, PhD

One of the phrases I hear most often from my leadership coaching clients is, “I feel overwhelmed.” The weight of expectations, the pace of change, the constant decisions—it all makes it easy to feel overwhelmed and pressured to solve everything quickly. But we don’t need to have it all figured out all the time. The best leaders I know aren’t the ones with all the answers—they’re the ones who are curious and who keep trying to ask the right questions. They simply try to get a little bit better each day. A little more curious. A little more patient. A little more intentional.

I certainly know how cliché it is to say, “Just get a little better each day.” Truthfully, I cringe typing that sentence. It sounds more like a motivational poster than a practical strategy—and I mostly dislike motivational posters. But growing as a leader is so much about steady intention and small improvements. If I can respond with slightly more empathy today than I did yesterday… if I can be a little more courageous in that tough conversation… if I can create a bit more space for others to speak and be heard—that’s progress. Slow, steady, real.

Give yourself permission to grow slowly. To stay curious, even about seemingly minor things. To celebrate the small wins. To just get a little better each day. Small steps, over time, cover many miles.

Leadership matters.
